Kishoregonj Correspondent
There has been reports of robbery, vandalism and arson at the village house of human rights activist Md. Rafiqul Islam in Kishoregonj. Recently some mischiefs and members of Kishore Gang went out in search of Md. Rafiqul Islam and his family. Upon not finding them, the goons invaded and vandalized his house and then set it on fire.

At this, when Md. Rafiqul Islam’s aged mother Safura Khatun tried to stop them, she fell victim of physical assault and other disrespectful acts. Later at the arrival of concerned neighbours, the goons escaped the scene, and before escaping, they threatened mother Safura Khatun to present Md. Rafiqul Islam and his family to them as soon as possible, or else they will unalive the family of Rafiqul Islam wherever they (the goons) can find them (the family).

After the attackers left, the neighbours and some students from schools and colleges around them came and helped to extinguish the fire. Due to the fire, two buildings of Md. Rafiqul Islam were severely damaged.

A resident there, Md Abdul Hannan has informed us, that Md. Rafiqul Islam is mainly known as a human right activist and a charitable person in the area. He contributes in different social and cultural programs by different means. He openly opposes all kinds of injustice and inequity.

Hanna’s assumption is that the goons are demanding a huge amount of ransom from Md. Rafiqul Islam, and upon not paying up the stipulated ransom, him and his family have become victims of theirs attacks and assaults.

At last, when Md. Rafiqul Islam’s mother Safura Khatun went to seek legal help from the local police station, the police expressed inability to help her and kicked her out of the police station. The reason behind this is the police and mischiefs cooperatively cause this type of unrest, vandalism and extortion in the society.
