A child was killed and several others were injured last night after a train rammed into multiple vehicles on the Kalurghat Bridge in Chattogram. Police said one of the injured is in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 10:30pm on Thursday (June 5) on the Boalkhali side of the bridge.
According to witnesses and officials, the Parjotok Express train was heading towards Chattogram from Cox’s Bazar when the collision happened. The railway signal was reportedly active at the time, indicating that vehicles should not enter the bridge. However, several vehicles defied the signal and went onto the bridge, where they were struck by the oncoming train.
One autorickshaw was completely crushed in the impact, and several other vehicles were damaged, some reportedly getting pinned under the train.
Aminul Islam, a firefighter from Kalurghat Fire Station, told reporters they received information about the accident around 10:45pm. “Two units, including an ambulance, were dispatched from our station. Rescue operations are still ongoing,” he said, adding that the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed.
Boalkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Sarwar said at least four vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collision. “One person has died in the incident,” he confirmed.
