A Dhaka court has remanded former Social Welfare Minister Dr Dipu Moni and former Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy in connection with the killing of a grocer, Abu Sayed, in the Bosila area on July 19.
BSS report said, Dr Dipu Moni has been remanded for four days, while Arif Khan Joy faces a five-day remand period. The decision was made by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Shohagh Uddin, who heard the police’s request for a 10-day remand for each of the accused.
The case revolves around the death of Abu Sayed, who was reportedly shot by police on the 40-feet road in Bosila during an incident involving the anti-discrimination student protests. On July 19, law enforcement officers fired indiscriminately at demonstrators, leading to Sayed’s fatal injuries.
The case was filed on August 13 by SM Amir Hamza, naming seven individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former minister Obaidul Quader. This filing marks the first legal action against Sheikh Hasina since she left the country on August 5.
The court’s decision has heightened tensions surrounding the case, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the context of the ongoing protests. The investigation continues as authorities seek to clarify the circumstances leading to Abu Sayed’s death.
